Self-drilling metal screws, also known as self-tapping screws, are designed to drill their own hole and create their own thread in a single operation, thus eliminating the need for pre-drilling in thin to medium metals.
Main Features
These screws offer considerable time savings and are ideal for assembling sheet metal, metal profiles, or fixing wood to a metal structure.
- Drill bit tip: The end of the screw is machined like a drill bit, allowing it to pierce directly into the material. The size of the point (from #1 to #5) determines the maximum thickness of metal it can drill; a #5 point can drill up to 13 mm (0.5 in) of steel.
- Threading: The helical body creates a thread perfectly adapted to the hole as the screw is driven in, ensuring a strong and precise fixing.
- Material: They are generally made of zinc-plated carbon steel (for dry indoor environments) or stainless steel (A2 or A4) for better corrosion resistance, particularly outdoors or in humid environments. Bimetallic versions (carbon steel tip and stainless steel body) are also available to combine drilling capacity and rust resistance.
- Head types: They come in various shapes (hexagonal, countersunk, domed, etc.) to suit different applications and aesthetic finishes. Some, particularly those for roofing, are equipped with an EPDM sealing washer to ensure a good seal.
Usage Tips
For optimal installation, follow these recommendations:
- Suitable tool: Use an electric screwdriver capable of providing the appropriate tightening torque. Avoid impact tools, as overtightening can damage the screw or the material.
- Material thickness: Ensure that the total thickness of the materials to be fixed does not exceed the drilling capacity of the screw drill bit tip.
- Screwing speed: Start screwing slowly to ensure proper centering, then increase the speed until the screw head is in firm contact with the surface, without excessive pressure.
